Meet William Burnett
Building Better Families in Our Community
My story begins in Wilmington, North Carolina in a household with my three older brothers, two older sisters and my parents, Alfred and Margaret Burnett. My parents were hard workers, my dad was a butcher and my mom was a domestic worker. My family had a modest home and we did not have the finest clothing but our home was filled with an immense amount of unconditional love from my parents. There were many challenges growing up but we always appreciated all the sacrifices our parents made. I wouldn’t change any of these life experiences because they framed me into a man with a desire to serve others, to be dedicated to my commitments and to operate with a high level of integrity.
My family is the reason why “building a better family” is not just a campaign slogan but a way of life for me. I am convinced that I can help our community but it will take hard work by all of us together to build stronger families.
I believe to have a better family, we have to start at an early age and get everyone involved in the process. A successful family begins at home and members of our community have to be involved. We need everyone from parents, law enforcement, pastors, teachers, social workers, civic leaders and politicians just to name a few.
I want to create programs for children that start at the elementary school level and continue to the high school years. Building a better family means we have to make sure the family is stable on all levels, that being, physically, mentally, socially, financially and spiritually.
Education and keeping the public informed will have to be a main focus for our community. My planned programs will be well designed with realistic goals that can be measured and reasonable timing. I will not be a sheriff for any one particular neighborhood, race, religion or gender. I will be sheriff for all the Citizens of Richmond.
